Diy Greek yogurt

I enjoy making my own Greek yogurt to help it fit in the budget. This recipe requires only normal kitchen materials and is a collection of short and simple steps. I got it from my mother in law.

Start by filling a double broiler with whole milk. Heat to 180°
(I used about 3/4 a gallon)

Remove from heat and allow to cool to 118°. Stir in powdered milk in a ratio of 1 c per gallon of milk.

Add starter (a cup of live culture yogurt) and mix together in another container.
(I save about a cup from my previous batch of yogurt. You can also buy plain yogurt that has a live culture from the grocery)

Insulate and allow to sit for at least 8 hours.

You now have regular yogurt. If you want to make it Greek yogurt continue with these next steps.

Place a cheesecloth or tshirt over a bowl and pour yogurt on top.

Place in fridge and allow to drain for at least 6 hours.

After it's been drained you have Greek yogurt and whey!

This plain yogurt tastes great with some jams or honey to add some sweetness.

Whey is great for soups and brothes.
